Playing with layout: Autumn quilt

Inspired by a maple leaf quilt, with rows upon rows of large maple leaves, I started piecing the blocks. Growing bored with the simple repetition, I started appliqued leaves and embroidered words. I imagined something like this, with wind-blown leaves tossed across the quilt top.

But I didn't know where my eye should go. There was no direction. Maybe the original structure isn't such a bad idea?

Some combination of both? Oh dear, this version would take forever.

Balancing movement and structure, chaos and order. Still a work in progress.

I'm with Bumble Beans -- I liked no. 1 and then I really liked no. 3! Lots of flying geese there, but it would be be really fun. google "no waste method for making flying geese units" for a speed piecing method for those pesky birds!

From a non-quilter: I like #3. The blocks are beautiful, and the colors are so wonderfully autumn. I like the way the third pattern moves. Excited to see the end product!

I love the movement in number 3... but I think they're all lovely.

I absolutely love this autumn quilt. I'm working on one of my own-yet I don't know when it will ever be finished (hopefully before autumn ends!). I have to go with number three as well!

Looks like you are having a good time playing around. Keep going and you will find the right layout for you. Can't wait to get together and sew!

Ditto to May's comment. 1 and 3 are winners.

Oh and my word verification is "unfergie".

In a sentence:

That outfit is so unfergie!

Sigh. I'm with #3. Way by far so. Sorry it will take forever. Plus, I'm so glad to see that other people post their word verification. It seems like such a great thing and I always want to, but I thought it might be weird. Phaw, when have I let that stop me?
